Alums Pay it Forward

Laura Strickland was juggling motherhood, homeschooling daughter Erin and helping her spouse with his realty business in 2006 when she decided to go back to school herself.

The momentum she'd achieved "doing basically anything that I could do legally in real estate without a license," Strickland said, was the springboard for change. That year she enrolled in the North Carolina Academy of Real Estate in Nags Head in pursuit of a real estate license. Ever the multi-tasker, she even organized study groups for her small class, noting, "I find it helps with learning to bounce things off each other."

Eight years later, Strickland is the president and broker/owner of Stellar Properties of the Outer Banks, a six-agent company that she runs with husband Wayne. The Kills Devil Hills firm, founded three years ago, specializes in short sales and foreclosures. To this day, Strickland said, the support, client-centric lessons and knowledge learned under veteran agent and North Carolina Academy of Real Estate instructor Barbara Crites continue to benefit her business.

"I felt that she prepared us for beyond our (course) exam. Not only did she teach us about real estate and real estate law, she made sure that we were prepared for the state (licensing) exam – little things that most people wouldn't even teach," the broker said.

And another important North Carolina Academy of Real Estate lesson that serves her today? "When you give people what they need and take good care of them, they come back to you again," Strickland said.

With that advice instilled, the Stellar Properties broker said that over the years she has recommended the school to many would-be licensees and those seeking continuing education in the field.

Matt Whelan, senior broker at Village Realty in Nags Head, can't believe it has already been 17 years since he took the first step to his career by enrolling at the North Carolina Academy of Real Estate.

"Some days it seems like yesterday," the Outer Banks transplant and Richmond, Va., native said, remembering his early years waiting tables and bartending – and admiring successful real estate professionals – before receiving his own license, then "coming up through the ranks" to become the successful REALTOR® that he is today.

Today, Whelan said, he still takes classes at the North Carolina Academy of Real Estate, including continuing education and the four-hour Mandatory Updates Course required by the North Carolina Real Estate Commission. And he, too, pays it forward by encouraging others to "get the best they can" by starting their real-estate education and learning from the "on-task and on-point instructors" at the North Carolina Academy of Real Estate.

"It has been very beneficial – a great experience for me," he added.
